The Power of Thinking Bigger in Class Action Litigation

A Quick Legal Take with Paul Anderson

One thing we always try to do as class action lawyers—and personal injury lawyers—is make the case bigger.

When someone comes into our office with a problem, of course we're going to take care of that problem. But we're also going to ask: is it just this one individual being harmed, or is this happening all around the country?

That shift in perspective can completely change the dynamics of a case. A case that initially looks like a $500,000 claim can become a $50 million case—just by thinking creatively and outside the box.

That’s what we always try to do—think outside the box to see the pattern, the real systemic problem that’s causing harm to many people.

With class actions, that kind of thinking becomes a powerful tool. And that’s the power of class action litigation.

There’s also real strength in numbers. And more importantly, through those numbers, class actions allow us to drive fundamental change in industries where harm is widespread.

I’ve always believed there are two powerful tools to change a corporation’s conduct: legislation, and litigation

Your state legislature can pass new laws. Or you can bring a case that forces accountability through the courts. And then, in effect, new legal precedent.

Those two avenues are pivotal in our work as lawyers—and when you succeed with one or both, you can change an entire industry. You can stop the harm, and ensure that those who were injured are compensated.

Get the settlement you need—and the recognition you deserve.
